What does GPI mean in UNCLASSIFIED

The Global Procurement Initiative (GPI) is an initiative launched by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to promote responsible, sustainable and transparent procurement processes worldwide.

GPI was created by UNOPS as a means of helping governments, businesses and non-governmental organizations reduce costs, enhance effectiveness and mitigate risk through improved procurement practices.

GPI works with countries to develop a framework that seeks to make the public sector more efficient in its purchase of goods and services. This includes setting up clear rules for obtaining competitive pricing on goods and services, strengthening government capacity and accountability, improving transparency within public procurement processes, supporting societal objectives such as gender equality or green energy targets while ensuring value for money is achieved in all purchases.

GPI's objective is to help governments achieve greater efficiencies in their purchase of goods and services while promoting social responsibility values such as green energy, gender equality or support for small businesses. GPI also promotes transparency between suppliers and buyers in terms of pricing and quality assurance of products.

GPI focuses on four main areas; Policy Reforms & Guidelines Development, Capacity Building & Training Programs, Analytical Tools & Solutions Delivery and Knowledge Management Platforms & Interventions. All these activities are focused on helping governments streamline their purchasing processes while adhering to social responsibility guidelines set out by international bodies such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
