Originally organized in 1918 by law professor Louis Marshall who served as its first president until his death in 1929 and later led by Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter during World War II years — when he helped rescue thousands from Nazi persecution —,the American Jewish Congress was born from a unified response amongst leading political figures who were determined to champion human dignity set forth by Balfour Declaration which sided with then British government decision granting an independent homeland for Jews within Palestine region.

Today Robert Gittelson serves as President who leads Executive Committee comprised of 15 additional directors alongside Chief Executive Officer David Harris who oversees day-to-day operations at headquarters located in New York City along with Regional Directors located across U.S.
