Gram-negative rods (GNRs) are bacteria that contain a thin peptidoglycan layer between the inner cell membrane and outer cell wall that makes them more resistant to certain antibiotics than other types of bacterial forms. These bacterial organisms have a negative reaction when tested with the Gram Stain test, thus giving them their name. GNRs include Escherichia coli (E. coli), Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella species, Shigella species, Campylobacter species as well as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. GNRs can cause serious health issues in humans such as food poisoning, urinary tract infections (UTIs), respiratory infections and sepsis due to infection with more dangerous GNRs like E.coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae. In addition they may also lead to some less common infections such intestinal infections caused by Fusobacterium species or brain abscesses from Bacteroides fragilis.
