What does GILC mean in COMPUTING

GILC stands for Global Initiative for Local Computing. It is an international network of policy makers, civil society organisations, academics and others who share a common vision of computing as a tool for social and political empowerment. The initiative seeks to ensure that the benefits of computing are shared equitably and that users are empowered to shape the development and use of technology within their communities.

GILC works to promote digital rights, secure access to open source software solutions, defend free expression online, expand privacy protections and reduce disparities in access to technology around the world. It aims to create an environment where people can securely express themselves online without fear of censorship or reprisal.

GILC helps local communities use technology by providing key resources such as equipment, training materials, and funding for projects that further the cause of local computing initiatives. Through workshops, seminars, webinars etc., GILC provides support for communities to set up systems based on open source software – like web development tools or mobile applications – enabling them to share their knowledge and experiences with other users worldwide.

You can join any number of international working groups focused on specific issues related to digital rights and technology access. You can also informally contribute your expertise by participating in events or subscribing to mailing lists related to information policy topics from around the world. Or if you have experience developing software or visual design skills you can contribute directly to projects supported by GILC through volunteer contributions such as coding or graphic design assistance.

GILC advocates for digital rights such as freedom expression online, privacy protections, equitable access to technologies around the world, unrestricted communication between individuals and groups across national borders through platforms like Voice Over IP (VoIP), open source software solutions that are accessible even in places with limited resources, technological self-determination amongst citizens living in different countries as well as protection from government censorship among other things.
