What is GDTR?

A Global Descriptor Table (GDT) is an advanced type of descriptor table used in protected mode operating systems, such as IBM PC DOS 4 and modern versions of Microsoft Windows. It provides details about how different types of memory are to be handled by the processor. For example, when using a GDT, one can specify which areas of memory should be readable or executable and which ones should be inaccessible due to security reasons. To control this table from the operating system's point-of-view, an additional register known as the Global Descriptor Table Register (GDTR) was designed into the processor architecture for this purpose.

How does GDTR work?

The contents of the GDT are specified by loading data into the GDTR register before entering protected mode.
