History

Kidal has been inhabited since at least the 11th century by a Tuareg people known as the Kel Tagine. For centuries it was a major trading hub along the trans-Saharan trade route, connecting southern Africa to Europe and Asia Minor. The city's main exports were salt, gold, ivory and slaves. By 1854, Kidal had become part of French Sudan. During this time, many French business interests came to Kidal to exploit its natural resources including livestock raising, gold mining and orchards. In 1960 it became part of Mali when French Sudan was granted independence from France.

Modern Day

Today, Kidal remains an important center for trade in northern Mali despite civil unrest that began in 2012 that has led to limited transportation links between the city and other parts of the country. It is also home to many educational institutions including universities, hospitals, agricultural research centers and Musee du Desert which is dedicated to preserving traditional Tuareg cultural artifacts such as weapons and jewelry. Despite security threats posed by extremist groups operating near Kidal's borders with Mauritania and Algeria, the city remains an important center of culture for its residents as well as visitors from around West Africa.
