What does FUO mean in NURSING

Fever of Unknown Origin (FUO) is a disorder characterized by an elevated body temperature of 38 °C or higher that persists for at least three weeks, with no known source or diagnosis after appropriate investigations.

The most common causes of FUO are infections such as pneumonia, tuberculosis and urinary tract infections. Other possible causes may include autoinflammatory diseases, neoplasms, connective tissue disorders and drug reactions.

The diagnosis of FUO typically involves a physical examination and a series of laboratory tests and imaging studies to determine the underlying cause. Blood work may include complete blood count, liver function tests, and renal function tests. Imaging studies such as chest X-rays, CT scans or ultrasound scans may be used to evaluate areas such as the lungs, abdomen and pelvic area.

Treatment for FUO depends on the underlying cause. Common treatments include antibiotics to treat any infection present, anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce fever and reduce inflammation in affected areas. In some cases additional treatments may be necessary such as immunosuppressants for autoinflammatory syndromes or radiation therapy for neoplasms.

While there is no single cure for FUO, treatment usually helps to manage symptoms and eventually gets rid of the condition. A correct diagnosis and prompt treatment are essential for reducing the duration and severity of the disease.

Complications from having FUO can include dehydration due to excessive sweating or vomiting associated with fevers; organ damage if not properly treated; secondary infections caused by weakened immune system; pneumonia caused by repeated episodes of respiratory infections; abscesses in areas that become inflamed due to prolonged fever; chronic fatigue syndrome associated with recurrent fevers over long periods of time; development delays in children due to prolonged illness.
