What does FTC mean in UNCLASSIFIED

FTC stands for Foil The Communists. It is a slogan used to describe the United States' foreign policy of attempting to prevent the spread of communism throughout the world during the Cold War.

The United States sought to contain and restrict communism in order to bookend its own expansion of democratic ideals and freedoms. This was done in order preserve these freedoms while preventing communist countries from spreading their ideology throughout the world.

The US attempted various actions such as political isolation, economic sanctions, military intervention, covert operations and propaganda campaigns in order keep communism contained within certain regions while protecting its own interests.

Ultimately, FTC was successful at containing communist expansion though it did not completely eradicate it from existing countries or end its spread into new countries entirely. It did however achieve its primary goal of preserving liberal democracy in many parts of the world including Europe and Japan.

While the Cold War has ended and threats posed by communism have waned significantly, there are still places where such ideology remains in place or poses a potential threat - especially in North Korea or other authoritarian states with a history of oppressive rule based on communist values. For this reason, some aspects of FTC are still relevant today.
