What does FOCAS mean in SOCIETIES

FOCAS stands for Forum on Communications and Society. It is an international research organization that focuses on exploring the impacts of digital media technologies, such as the Internet, mobile devices and social networks, on communication and society.

FOCAS members come from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines, including academics from the fields of communication studies, sociology, political science, anthropology, economics, psychology and engineering. In addition to researchers from different disciplines around the world, industry professionals such as consultants or technology designers also contribute their insights to FOCAS' initiatives.

FOCAS conducts research projects in interdisciplinary teams with policymakers and technology users. Its projects explore a range of topics related to digital media technology impacts on communication practices in areas like health promotion campaigns; online learning; connectivity in remote areas; digital privacy protection; data transparency policies; social media-based democracy promotion efforts; among others.
