History

The Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood (FMDM) was founded by Mother Mary Francis, Piazzoli in 1929 in Rome Italy. She had studied under the Franciscans while completing her studies at Louvain University and desired to create a religious order that would use a Franciscan commitment to poverty in service of the Divine Motherhood. From humble beginnings with only four members, by 1934 there were more than 20 members dedicated to serving as missionaries throughout India. In 1950, they established their first monasteries outside India, spreading throughout South America and Africa as well as into other parts of Asia. Today there are more than 1,000 sisters working around the world in many different forms of mission including schools, hospitals, orphanages and parish centers.
