Fernando Henrique Cardoso was a Brazilian sociologist, professor, and politician who served as the 34th President of Brazil from 1995 to 2003. Before becoming president, he was a prominent member of the Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB) and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Finance in the government of Itamar Franco. He has also served as a senator for São Paulo from 1983 to 1992.

During his presidency, ideological trends such as "heterodox" economic policies and increased social spending were introduced in order to promote economic growth, reduce poverty and inequality levels, and enhance democratisation in Brazil. His main achievement was termed the Real Plan which saw inflation fall from over 3,600% in 1994 to 28% in 1997. His policies also promoted employment through investment in infrastructure projects such as highways, ports, airports and sanitation systems throughout the country. Moreover, for two consecutive terms he liberalised many key industries such as telecommunications, electric power generation and distribution which further stimulated new foreign investments into these sectors.

Fernando Henrique Cardoso officially became president on January 1st 1995 after winning 54% of the vote in a highly contested election against fellow candidate Lula da Silva who won 27%. He held office until his term ended on December 31st 2003 making him one of the longest serving presidents in recent history.

During his 8-year tenure as President of Brazil Fernando Henrique Cardoso made several major accomplishments including reducing inflation from over 3,600% to 28%, improving foreign relations with neighbouring countries (such as signing a free-trade treaty with Mercosur), modernizing Brazil’s infrastructure by investing heavily in public works projects such as highways, ports and airports; liberalizing key industries such as telecommunications; and helping secure membership into the World Trade Organization which opened up international trade opportunities for Brazilian exports amongst other significant achievements.

Since leaving office at the end of 2003 Fernando Henrique Cardoso has remained actively involved in politics by maintaining a strong foothold within his political party PSDB (Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira) whilst also writing books about Brazil's success story during his time leading the nation which have been praised both nationally and internationally alike.

Moreover he does hold honorary degrees from renowned universities like Harvard University (2017) or Columbia University (2007).
