History

Fond du Lac’s earliest known settlers were Native Americans who had lived along the lake’s shoreline since centuries before European settlers arrived in the area. In 1673 French explorer Father Claude-Jean Allouez built a mission at what is now known as St Peter’s church site — commemorated on the National Register of Historic Places — which was among the earliest white settlements in present-day Wisconsin. In 1785, Jean Baptiste Cadotte constructed his fur trading post at what would become Fond du Lac's present-day location overlooking Lake Winnebago, making it one of Wisconsin's oldest European settlements. Later on, after undergoing a series of name changes like Little Rapids (1834–1836) and Kisstown (1836–1855), Fond du Lac officially became incorporated into a city in 1956 and quickly grew to become one of Wisconsin's major economic centers due to its abundance natural resources such as limestone quarries and commercial fisheries.
