History

The origins of the FBI date back to 1908 when President Theodore Roosevelt appointed William J. Burns as a special agent responsible for investigating various significant offenses against the United States government. In 1909, Congress granted additional powers to Burns' office that would eventually lead to its transformation into what was later termed the Bureau of Investigation by 1910. The bureau primarily focused on anti-trust actions and other economic crimes during its early years as well as handling investigations related to espionage on behalf of foreign powers against American interests. Throughout World War I and World War II, the FBI's jurisdiction expanded further to include bank robbery cases and other violent crimes that threatened national security as well as counterintelligence operations designed to root out foreign spies who were operating within US borders. In 1935 it officially became known as the Federal Bureau of Investigation or FBI.

Functions

The main mission of the FBI is to serve justice through advancing safety and security for all Americans while also protecting civil liberties guaranteed by our Constitution’s Bill of Rights. The agency works closely with local police forces throughout the nation in order to investigate major crimes ranging from terrorism threats to organized crime syndicates operating within US borders; as well as investigating financial frauds like tax evasion or money laundering schemes; internet scams; identity theft; human trafficking; public corruption; espionage cases; drug trafficking; counterfeiting charges; computer hacking attempts targeting US government systems including national defense networks; cyberbullying campaigns involving minors; illegal arms trading internationally; environmental protection violations related upon endangered species or air pollution laws infringing federal regulations with regional authority bodies including weapons acquisition disregarding imposed rules among others.
