What does FAPA mean in PSYCHIATRY

A Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (FAPA) is an honor received by psychiatrists who have achieved excellence in their profession. It is given to recognize exceptional contributions to psychiatric practice, science, and/or education.

Any qualified psychiatrist who has demonstrated excellence in their field may be nominated and eventually become a Fellow of the APA. This includes those who are active members of the organization and have made significant contributions to psychiatry or any related field.

The nominating process for FAPA is through an online form on the APA website. You must provide detailed information regarding your nominee's qualifications and accomplishments that are relevant to the award criteria. Once submitted, it will be reviewed by members of the Awards Committee before approval.

A variety of factors are taken into consideration when selecting a candidate for FAPA, such as their professional accomplishments and contributions in their field; any awards received for academic achievement; research activities dedicated to advancing knowledge about psychiatry; leadership within professional organizations; devotion to patient care; commitment to psychiatric advocacy; and more.

Receiving this recognition holds immense prestige in both clinical and academic fields, as well as a few tangible benefits. This includes complimentary registration fees at selected APA Conferences & Annual Meetings; special recognition at those events; access to unique resources and opportunities presented to Fellows exclusively after receiving the award; mentoring opportunities with current Fellows, and more.

The nominations process can take up to one year depending on how quickly all relevant documents are acquired during evaluation period. Nominations made closer to May will get priority since awards presentations happen at APAs annual meeting which usually happens then. However, every effort will be made by both you and committees evaluating your nomination for it to not exceed one year.

No age limit exists when applying for FAPA recognition though applicants should take note that it requires lengthy career achievements which could potentially require decades of dedication from the applicant. More so than age however is proof that the nominee's accomplishments meet established standards set forth by the American Psychiatric Association.
