What does FAD mean in VETERINARY

FAD is an acronym for Fever, Anorexia, and Dehydration. It is a collection of three medical conditions that can be dangerous if left untreated.

Generally speaking, FAD is caused by underlying health issues such as infection or illness. Other things like lifestyle choices (such as substance abuse or excessive exercise) can also contribute to a person becoming ill with FAD.

The most common symptoms associated with FAD include fever, fatigue, anorexia (lack of appetite), nausea/vomiting, and dehydration (dry mouth/dark urine). Additionally, other signs such as chills or night sweats may also be present depending on the underlying condition causing the FAD diagnosis.

Treatment for FAD depends on the cause as well as individual patient health status. In general though, treatment involves rehydrating the patient with IV fluids and antibiotics if there is an infection present. Depending on the cause of the disease process other therapies may also be necessary such as nutritional support.

Recovery time depends on many things including age and overall health status at the time of diagnosis. Generally speaking though recovery from acute bouts of fever/dehydration due to infections can take anywhere from several days to several weeks depending on severity of case and aggressiveness of treatment protocol chosen by healthcare provider.
