What does EYD mean in EUROPEAN

The European Year for Development (EYD) is a joint initiative by the European Union dedicated to raising awareness of global development issues and to promoting international cooperation. It marks 2015 as a year-long celebration of the ongoing development efforts by the EU and its Member States.

The EYD will begin on 1 January 2015 and end on 31 December 2015, marking 2015 as an important year in the history of international development.

The objective of the EYD is to celebrate and promote cooperation between EU countries, civil society organizations, private sector businesses, academics, media professionals, youth groups and citizens from across Europe and beyond in order to tackle global poverty and inequality.

A wide range of events are planned all over Europe throughout 2015 including major conferences, debates, exhibitions and media campaigns that will focus on different aspects of global development. These events will help raise public awareness on pressing social issues such as gender equality, access to education, health, environmental protection and other sustainable development goals.

Technology plays an integral role for achieving sustainable global development as it can be used to generate data that can inform policy decisions while also providing access to information about various development initiatives. During EYD events around Europe there will be a special emphasis on how digital technologies can be used to support development projects around the world.

The EYD is sponsored by multiple European Union institutions such as DG International Cooperation & Development (DEVCO), DG Digital Economy & Society (DESI), DG Migration & Home Affairs (HOME) as well as non-EU partner organisations such as UNAIDS, UN Women and Eurodad among others.

Involvement could come in many forms from hosting or attending relevant debates/seminars; contributing towards charitable or volunteer work connected with any particular issue; participating in online forums or campaigns; taking part in workshops or even donating money towards causes related to global development initiatives. As part of celebrating progress made over recent years there will be awards presented at key points throughout 2015 recognizing individuals who have significantly contributed towards advancing development objectives around Europe including individuals motivated by their personal commitment to volunteering or making donations etc.

The EU has put forward various monitoring mechanisms aiming at assessing both the impact of its financial assistance for third countries but also tracking progress achieved through its own co-operation initiatives such as those with UN organisations or other agencies with whom it works closely with on various projects across different continents.
