What is the Emerging Theatre Directors Bursary?

The Emerging Theatre Directors Bursary (ETDB) is an initiative of the Department of Arts and Culture to support new theatre directors in their development. It provides financial assistance to help young theatre directors to build their skills, network and launch their careers in the industry.

Who is eligible for the Emerging Theatre Directors Bursary?

To be eligible for the ETDB you must be a South African citizen between 18 - 35 years old with no more than 2 years of directing experience. You should also have secured funding from a reputable arts organisation or company to undertake a tailored training programme.

How much will I receive from the bursary?

Successful applicants will receive up to R25 000 a year for a maximum of two years towards their training programme. However, each application will be assessed on its merits and awards are subject to approval by an independent panel.

When can I apply for the bursary?

Applications open each year in June and close at the end of August. Awards are made in October after consideration by an independent panel.
