Meaning

The "A" and "G" in AG stand for "Solomon Islands". As a former British colony, the country adopted English as its national language, making it easier for non-indigenous citizens to learn to communicate with each other. In addition, most of its population speaks at least one pidgin dialect used throughout Melanesia (an area which includes many western Pacific Island nations). Because it is relatively isolated from other countries by vast stretches of ocean, many of its people have become closely related linguistically and culturally.

History

Solomon Islands was colonized by the British Empire in 1893 as a protectorate before becoming fully integrated into their empire in 1898. In 1975, it became an internally self-governing territory before finally achieving full independence in 1978. Since then, Solomon Islands has maintained close relations with Great Britain and shown great resilience despite various political challenges such as coup attempts, violent civil unrest and corruption allegations against former Prime Ministers during the 1990s and 2000s.

Economic Development

In recent years, Solomon Islands has seen significant growth in its economy due to increased investment from abroad coupled with government initiatives aimed at reducing poverty levels and stimulating agricultural productivity. It also relies heavily on fishing industries as well as revenues generated from tourism activities. This has resulted in a steady increase in GDP per capita since 2007 when it stood at $1,100 (inflation adjusted). In 2017 GDP per capita hit $2,200 - more than double the 2007 figure - showing that economic development is taking place within this small island nation.
