History
The Armed Forces Staff College was established in 1946 as the Army-Navy Staff College due to a recommendation by President Truman to create a unified service college that would provide uniform training for junior staff officers of each branch. In 1948 it changed its name from Army-Navy Staff College to Armed Forces Staff College after gaining status as a tri-service organization and becoming one of the first joint commands between all three branches. Since its inception, AFSC has been a highly selective school dedicated to training future leaders of all services at the same time in one place.
Curriculum
AFSC’s curriculum focuses on providing its students with an understanding of joint operations and warfare with emphasis on interagency integration and whole-of-government approaches to warfighting and national security topics. The college offers both resident programs such as the Intermediate Level Education (ILE) course geared towards senior field grade officers who are transitioning into Lieutenant Colonel/Commander rank and nonresident programs such as Distance Education (DE) course that allows mid-career officers unable to attend resident classes for various reasons an opportunity to graduate from AFSC with a Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Phase 1 certification.
In addition, AFSC also offers several elective courses that emphasize military decision making process or joint planning processes either through seminars or through field studies. All courses are aimed towards arming students with the knowledge needed to take more responsible leadership roles within their respective branches or across multiple branches if they are active duty member of already existing joint teams.
Facilities
AFSC features expansive facilities designed exclusively for student use complete with classrooms built specifically for teaching large lecture sizes typical of today’s modern educational models; conference rooms where wargames can be conducted; auditoriums where guest lecturers speak out about relevant topics; and library access where research resources include books, newspapers, magazines and online publications available only through our Special Library Services division. The library also grants access to outside sources such as JSTOR or other military related journals available openly on internet.
