What does AFRES mean in AIR FORCE

The Air Force Reserve (AFRES) is a division of the United States Air Force that provides reserve personnel with the opportunity to serve their country while also pursuing civilian careers.

The major difference between AFRES and regular members of the U.S. Air Force is that AFRES personnel are not on active duty full-time; they serve on an as-needed basis and typically participate in traditional training days, such as weekend drills and annual training exercises at military installations across the country or abroad.

Any person who meets all eligibility requirements may join AFRES with an enlistment contract or an officer appointment contract. Applicants may be required to pass aptitude tests, physical fitness tests, and a medical examination before being accepted into the program. Additionally, those who wish to become officers must have at least three years of post-secondary education or equivalent experience in a related field.

There are a variety of jobs available within AFRES depending on experience, qualifications, and interests including pilots, navigators/combat systems officers, aircrew members/loadmasters, aircraft maintainers/mechanics, civil engineers, medical professionals, chaplains, communicators/cryptologists/information technology experts and more.
