What does EMP1 mean in NAVY

To become an Electrician's Mate (power & Light) Petty Officer First Class, one must complete Navy technical training, as well as specialized training for this particular rating. This training includes instruction on electrical circuitry and systems, troubleshooting techniques, and operating principles for a wide range of electrical equipment.

The primary duty of the Electrician's Mate (power & Light) Petty Officer First Class is to inspect, maintain, repair and operate all electrical equipment aboard ships and other craft. This includes navigational lighting systems, navigation radar systems, communication systems and power distribution systems. Additionally they may also be responsible for installing new equipment or performing tests to ensure that it is working properly.

While much of their duties take place in a safe environment while afloat or ashore; they may encounter some degree of risk during shipboard maintenance operations or while working around energized circuits. The use of safety procedures along with vigilance will help minimize any potential risks associated with this job.

In order to qualify for this position one must have completed high school or obtained GED certification with basic mathematics skills as well as two years of experience in electrical work. Additionally applicants should have an aptitude for learning new technology quickly as well as good communication skills and manual dexterity.

Those who demonstrate exceptional performance in their duties may be selected to attend advanced certification courses which can lead to higher pay grades or even officer positions within naval service. Additionally those who excel at demonstrating leadership skills may also have opportunities within naval leadership roles.
