What does EM1 mean in NAVY

An Electrician's Mate 1st Class is a U.S. Navy rating that specializes in electrical and electronics systems maintenance, repair, and operation of ships' systems and equipment. This includes everything from generators to lighting, electrical distribution systems, radar, navigation, and communication systems.

The duties of an Electrician's Mate 1st Class include troubleshooting electrical problems on board ships. They also install, maintain, operate and repair various types of electronic, electrical wiring/cabling components that include motors, generators, lighting fixtures, circuitry and associated instruments. They must be familiar with shipboard safety procedures for hazardous materials handling to ensure safe operations.

To be eligible for the role of Electrician's Mate 1st Class you must have knowledge of electricity including AC/DC theory as well as be able to read blueprints and diagrams for wire runs and associated equipment schematics. Additionally you must pass a Background Investigation (BI) before acceptance into the US Navy rating program.

To become an Electrician’s Mate First Class one has to complete part or all of their technical school training at Naval Training Center Great Lakes in Illinois or other Naval training facilities throughout the United States. After completion of their technical school training they will then attend additional “C” schools in order to receive more advanced courses in their particular specialty areas as needed by the current fleet operations.

All candidates interested in becoming an EM1 must meet certain basic requirements such as being a US citizen age 17-39 with no dependents; having a high school diploma or GED certificate; passing medical examinations; passing a background check; passing ASVAB tests; qualifying physically for naval service; demonstrating appropriate moral character; obtaining parental consent if under 18 years old; obtaining approval from their commanding officer before entering active duty in the US Navy.

Newly enlisted personnel can expect to spend up to 3 months at boot camp followed by 4-8 weeks for technical school depending on individual qualifications prior entry into navy service and then around 8-13 weeks at C schools depending again on what specialties one choose prior beginning onboard ship work.

With dedication and experience within this field personnel may qualify for advancement opportunities such as Chief Electrical Officer (CEO) or Petty Officer First Class (PO1). Additional advancement opportunities can also arise depending on individual performance such as EOOW (Electrical Officer Of the Watch) or ROC (Relief Operations Coordinator).
