History
The Equal Justice Coalition was founded in 2001 by members of the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA) in response to the growing unmet legal needs of low-income individuals across the United States. NLADA had identified a lack of adequate resources available for providing legal representation to those unable to afford it. In addition, they observed that many court systems were overwhelmed because they did not have adequate support from non-profits or other organizations that could provide assistance with filing paperwork as well as providing information about laws. To address these needs, EJC was established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to expanding access to justice in courts throughout America.
Goals and Objectives
The mission of the Equal Justice Coalition is “to ensure equal access to justice for all underrepresented persons regardless of income level build collaborative relationships within communities and engage stakeholders in advocacy efforts that promote economic stability while protecting civil rights.” To achieve this goal, EJC works with state court systems in order create pathways which allow all individuals an opportunity to participate equitably in the judicial system and gain access to basic resources such as pro bono attorneys, volunteer lawyers for consultation or actual representation when things like residential evictions are at risk at no cost; helplines where an individual can get quick information regarding their rights; online courses about navigating different legal matters; and/or access points where people can access forms in order complete certain processes related to family law issues such as divorce or guardianship forms.
