What does AFL mean in FOOTBALL

Australian Football Losers (AFL) is a professional sports league in Australia that plays the popular sport of Australian rules football. AFL features 18 teams from all over the country, including the cities of Melbourne and Sydney. The season runs from March to September each year.

The origins of AFL date back to 1858 when the sport first began in Victoria, Australia. Since then, the game has evolved into the game we know today with professional teams and an established governing body called the Australian Football League.

There are currently 18 teams in the AFL, spread across five states in Australia - Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland. Each team represents a different city or region within those states and compete for the national title each year.

In order to play professionally in AFL, players must be aged 17 or older and either living or playing football in Australia. They must also complete an application process prior to being drafted by one of the 18 clubs in the competition.

The main competition format consists of a round-robin style home-and-away season consisting of eighteen matches per team followed by four weeks of playoffs culminating with a Grand Final match between two grand finalists.

At the end of each season, players may be awarded awards such as Best & Fairest Player which acknowledges consistency throughout their performance over a full season as well as individual awards such as Coleman Medal for highest goal scorer or Rising Star Award for outstanding first-year effort.

The governing body for AFC is known as the Australian Football League (AFL). It has 10 member clubs from around Australia who together make decisions involving clubs both on and off field ranging from community initiatives to rulings on player eligibility and competitions rules.
