What does AFL mean in UNIONS

The Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) is the largest labour organization in Alberta, representing 60 unions and more than 200,000 workers in both public and private sectors. It focuses on protecting workers' rights, promoting safe workplaces, advancing fair wages and advocating for social justice.

The main goals of AFL are to make sure that all workers in Alberta have access to safe working conditions, fair wages and basic labour standards like collective bargaining rights. They also strive to improve living standards by advocating for better public services, such as health care and education.

Any union or workplace that has a membership comprised primarily of Albertans is eligible to join the AFL. Unions must apply for affiliation with AFL but once accepted they become part of an important network of organized labour that works together for better working conditions in Alberta.

The AFL works closely with provincial and federal governments on behalf of its members to ensure laws are enacted that protect worker’s rights. This includes lobbying governments for stronger safety regulations, increased minimum wage and more effective enforcement of current labour laws. They also defend members who face legal actions from employers who violate their rights.

They provide expertise on various topics such as collective agreement language and salary scales as well as helping unions understand their rights under existing legislation so they can negotiate more effectively on behalf of their members.

Yes. The AFL's Education Department provides learning opportunities through conferences, seminars and other educational materials related to worker's rights issues in Alberta. Courses focus on topics like employment law, health & safety regulations, collective bargaining strategies and strike planning preparation among other relevant subjects.

Yes. The NFL assists its member unions when disputes arise between employers and employees by providing mediation services or making recommendations to arbitrators or mediators during conciliation efforts.
