What does EHC mean in REHABILITATION

EHC is an umbrella term for services that support children and young people from birth to 25 with special educational needs and/or disabilities. It includes schools, health services such as GPs or hospitals, local councils, social care providers, and charities.

Eligibility depends on each individual case; a professional assessment will determine whether an EHC plan is necessary to help support your child's education. Generally speaking, eligibility decisions are based on the impact of your child's special needs or disability on their day-to-day life.

An EHC plan outlines what help and support a child or young person may need in order to reach their educational goals. This can include extra support at home or school, specialist equipment or therapies they may require, advice on how to access additional support services etc.

The first step is to ask your child’s school or college for a request form. You can then fill in this form with information about why you think an EHC Plan could help your child succeed in school. Once completed it should be returned to the school who will carry out a formal assessment of need before making any decisions about eligibility.

Your local authority will consider the information provided and carry out its own assessments to decide if an EHC Plan should be issued. If successful you will be invited by the local authority to attend a meeting where you can discuss and agree priorities for supporting your child’s education.

The process takes approximately 20 weeks from the initial request being made until the final document is issued by the local authority – however timescales may vary depending upon individual cases and availability of resources within each local authority area.

Once an EHC plan has been issued it is managed by a dedicated ‘EHC Coordinator’ who works within your Local Authority – they are responsible for overseeing all aspects of managing your Child’s plan including implementation of action points and assessing progress against previously set goals etc.

Yes - Parents/carers are entitled to be involved in all decision making processes surrounding their Child’s Plan; this includes participating in annual reviews of progress against targets stated within the Plan as well as challenging decisions if needed etc.

Yes - Depending on individual circumstances families may qualify for additional funding through Accessible Transport Grants, Health Monitoring Grants or Special Educational Needs Discretionary Funds etc.
