What does EH mean in BRITISH MEDICINE

In most cases, EH is an inherited condition caused by mutations in the genes that encode for proteins that are important for skin structure and barrier function. The most common forms of EH are caused by mutations in the KRT10, KRT12, LOR, and NIPAL4 genes.

Symptoms usually occur soon after birth and include thickened patches of skin on the palms of hands and/or soles of feet. These pockets form blisters which may be painful and itchy when broken open. Skin may appear scaly, yellowish-brown or reddish-brown in color due to increased thickness of the epidermis, as well as white spots around hair follicles with increased pigmentation on the face and trunk regions.

An experienced dermatologist can diagnose EH based on a patient's medical history and physical examination. Further tests such as genetic testing or skin biopsies may be requested in order to confirm diagnosis and identify which mutation in which specific gene is causing the disease.

There is no cure for this condition, but it can be managed with lifestyle changes such as avoiding extreme temperatures, avoiding irritants like soaps that could further dry out skin or increase inflammation, keeping nails trimmed short to avoid scratching affected areas, applying moisturizers regularly to keep skin hydrated while protecting it from environmental factors such as windburn or sunburn. Oral retinoids (Vitamin A derivatives) have been found effective at reducing inflammation associated with this condition.

Depending on one's personal health goals they may consider genetic counseling prior to pregnancy in order to understand how their particular mutation may affect future generations if passed along through inheritance; however this does not equate to being unable to have children due to complications arising from their condition specifically.
