History
Formed by London Missionary Society missionaries in 1835, EFKS was originally known as The Congregational Christian Church of Samoa. In 1938, the name was changed to Ekalesia Faapotopotoga Kerisimasi Samoa following recommendations from leaders to emphasize an independent identity as a Samoan Church. The Synod Council continued to work towards self-governance during this period leading up to full autonomy in 1975 when it became de jure independent from foreign ecclesiastical power upon officially becoming “The National Church of Samoa†or “Ekalesia Faapotopotoga Kerisiano Samoa†(EFKS). Since then, EFKS has become deeply entrenched in the everyday lives of many Samoans. It remains an integral part of their cultural identity today.
Beliefs/Structure
EFKS adheres closely to traditional Samoan beliefs while upholding Christian principles such as love for one another, forgiveness and respect for human dignity. The Church is organized into three governing bodies-the Conference, Synod Council and General Assembly which are responsible for making decisions that affect all members at both local and national levels. This structure allows for more efficient decision-making processes that can quickly respond to whatever challenges may arise within its many branches scattered across different geographical locations within Samoa's main islands Upolu & Savai'i as well as other islands where there are also local EFKS branches overseas such as American Samoa & Tokelau Islands.
