What does EDFT mean in EDUCATIONAL

The East Detroit Federation of Teachers (EDFT) is a local collective bargaining organization for educational professionals working in the East Detroit School District. We represent teachers, nurses, librarians, counselors and all other certified personnel employed by the district.

Becoming a member is simple: if you are an eligible employee within the East Detroit School District, you may join by completing an application form and paying your dues. This entitles you to representation from EDFT in labor disputes and includes access to benefits such as professional development and networking opportunities.

Our team provides a wide range of services for members, including collective bargaining during contract negotiations, assistance with grievances or disciplinary actions, legal representation in court proceedings related to employment issues, lobbying on behalf of members’ interests at the state level and professional development workshops.

We represent any case that involves the rights and well-being of our members in their employment at the East Detroit School District. This includes contractual issues, dismissal or termination hearings, evaluation or salary appeals, workplace harassment or discrimination cases and any other matters that arise during employment.

Representation provided by EDFT is ongoing until the issue has been resolved satisfactorily for all parties involved. Cases can take days or weeks depending on their complexity and nuances; however we strive to resolve matters efficiently while ensuring that our members’ interests are always protected.

Dues are calculated based on each member’s annual salary so that everyone pays an equitable portion for representation services offered by EDFT. There is also a one-time initiation fee payable upon joining our union which covers administrative costs associated with processing membership applications and onboarding new members onto the payroll system.

In addition to providing legal protection for employees in their workplaces, being part of EDFT also gives access to networking events and conferences throughout the year where you can share best practices with likeminded individuals from nearby school districts as well as meet potential mentors who may help further your career growth into leadership positions down the line.

All conversations must adhere strictly to regulations outlined under Michigan’s Labor Relations Act; therefore discussions should focus solely on matters related to wages, hours worked and other job conditions agreed upon by both parties prior to contract ratification without delving into unrelated topics such as politics or religion.

Meetings take place regularly throughout each school year according to schedules set out prior at the beginning so that all attendees may plan accordingly around their professional commitments at work; however it is important to note that additional sessions may be called if necessary due to unforeseen circumstances pertaining directly to collective bargaining or workplace disputes between staff members.
