An Emergency Department (ED) is a hospital-based medical specialty area where people with acute illnesses or injuries receive treatment. The ED provides care for conditions that require prompt medical attention, such as severe trauma, heart attack and stroke. It also serves as a point of entry into the hospital for individuals who will need further care in the hospital or another facility.

The Emergency Department typically provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for a variety of medical conditions, including minor and major illnesses, traumatic injuries, and environmental accidents. Services include laboratory tests, X-ray imaging, medications, suturing wounds, intravenous therapy and stabilization of serious medical emergencies.

An emergency room (ER) is specifically designed to treat life-threatening illnesses or injuries that require immediate medical intervention. This includes traumatic injuries or severe illnesses like heart attack or stroke. An urgent care clinic provides non-emergency medical treatment for minor illnesses and injuries such as cuts, sprains, colds, flu symptoms etc.

Length of time spent waiting in the ED varies depending on the type of illness or injury you have and how many other patients are being seen at the same time. Generally speaking however patients can expect to wait at least 30 minutes before being seen by a physician or nurse practitioner.

Yes it’s generally okay for you to bring one companion with you when you visit the ED. Your guest should remain in your presence throughout your visit unless denied access by staff due to safety concerns or other reasons. If possible make sure your guest stays in your line of vision at all times.

You should bring any medicines that you take on a regular basis; a list of any allergies that you have; pertinent health records if they exist; insurance cards; photo identification; payment methods/options; and contact information from any referring doctor if applicable.

No appointments are not necessary for most visits to EDs – just show up during normal visiting hours and let the triage team know what brings you in.

For safety reasons it's best not to bring weapons like guns; sharp objects like knives; recreational drugs like marijuana etc.; tools like pocket knives etc.; aerosol cans (deodorant spray etc.). It’s also best not wear jewelry because removing it might interfere with monitoring equipment attached during your exam.

Most hospitals charge fees associated with visits made to their ER but some institutions may offer free services based on financial eligibility rules set forth by their governing body.
