What does AFCD mean in MILITARY

Air Force Combat Diver (AFCD) is a specialty within the United States Air Force that specializes in underwater tasks to support military operations.

AFCDs are able to conduct close reconnaissance of beachheads, recovery of personnel and equipment, underwater demolition, port surveys, and harbor defense. They may also be called upon to provide security underwater or on shore during amphibious landings or other tactical missions.

Training for AFCDs is rigorous and highly-specialized. It typically takes between 8 and 10 weeks to complete their initial qualifications training at Naval Support Activity Panama City in Florida. After completion of the initial course, personnel will be required to attend additional courses to maintain their skillset and qualifications over time.

To become an AFCD, personnel must first adhere to the minimum requirements set out by the US Air Force and demonstrate aptitude for successful completion of the specialist coursework. In addition, applicants must have a SCUBA certification from a recognized organization that has been approved by the NAVY EOD Program Manager prior to arriving at training.

Candidates undergoing AFDC qualification must pass two physical fitness tests comprised of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength/endurance, agility/coordination exercises and swim events before they can be accepted into the program. The tests ensure all personnel meet a certain level of competency before beginning training activities.
