What Is an Alkaline Fuel Cell?

An alkaline fuel cell (AFC) is a type of electrochemical device that combines hydrogen atoms with oxygen molecules in a liquid electrolyte solution to create direct electrical current. The most common electrolyte solutions used are potassium hydroxide (KOH) or sodium hydroxide (NaOH). These solutions act as catalysts for the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen which results in electric current production and release of water vapor as a byproduct. The reaction is also known as "oxidation-reduction" or redox.

How Does It Work?

The reaction between hydrogen and oxygen molecules occurs on the surface of two different electrodes (the cathode and the anode) inside the alkaline fuel cell. On the cathode side, oxygen molecules are attracted towards positively charged ions generated by electrolysis; on the other hand, negatively charged electrons are attracted towards the anode where hydrogen molecules are present.
