What does AFB mean in MEDICAL

An Acid-Fast Bacillus (AFB) is a bacterial species that can survive even in highly acidic environments and is also resistant to common treatments such as antibiotics. The outer layer of these organisms protect them from the environment and allow them to remain viable for long periods of time.

Acid-Fast Bacilli can be found naturally in water, soil, and air sources that contain organic matter. These organisms can also exist inside of human hosts, where they can cause various diseases depending on their type.
