What does DVS mean in VETERINARY

A Doctor of Veterinary Science, also known as a veterinary doctorate, is an advanced degree in veterinary medicine. The program consists of two years of coursework and research in the areas of clinical sciences, pathology, pharmacology, public health, parasitology, immulogy animal nutrition and microbiology. Upon completion of the program students receive the DVS and can pursue a career in research or teaching in veterinary medicine.

The DVS program generally takes around two years to complete. This includes one year or coursework and one year for research and dissertation development. However, some programs vary in length depending on individual universities and courses taken.

To be eligible for admission into a Doctorate of Veterinary Science program applicants must have completed an accredited undergraduate degree in animal science or veterinary medicine and have achieved good grades during their studies. Additional requirements may vary by institution.

Through the Doctorate of Veterinary Science program students receive training on clinical sciences such as pathology, pharmacology, public health parasitology immulogy animal nutrition and microbiology amongst other related topics. Additionally they will be required to undertake research and write a dissertation to support their findings at the conclusion of their studies.

After completing all coursework within the program candidates must then pass an examination from the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine to obtain certification as a board-certified veterinarian.

Graduates who complete their Doctorate in Veterinary Science often embark on careers as researchers or educators in universities or veterinary-related institutions; they can also go on to work as pathologists or practitioners providing care for animals either through private practices or within zoos and wildlife parks.

While prior experience with animals is not essential for entry into this program some knowledge about animal healthcare is recommended. Students should also have an interest in scientific inquiry as many courses involve laboratory work researching specific topics.

During your Doctorate you may be able to participate in internships that offer hands-on experience working with animals which could include everything from zookeeper positions to technical roles working with pharmaceuticals companies that manufacture treatments used on animals.
