The Deputy US Marshal is appointed to a specific region by the President of the United States with the confirmation of the Senate. The Deputy US Marshals are usually supervised by U.S. Marshals who oversee their work in that particular region and guide them on day-to-day tasks or special operations they undertake together. The DUSM reports to the district U.S. Marshal on all matters concerning office operations and enforcement activities within their jurisdiction. Furthermore, they are tasked with carrying out civil and criminal proceedings against individuals or organizations which include service of process, protection of witnesses, management of assets seized from criminals such as firearms or narcotics, extradition duties, fugitive apprehension and transportations among many others.
