What does AES mean in PHYSIOLOGY

The symptoms of AES vary based on the individual and the severity of the illness, but common signs may include headache, fever, confusion, drowsiness, seizures and impaired motor function. Other signs may also occur depending on which type of virus has caused the infection.

Treatment for AES varies depending on its cause and severity; however, hospitalization may be needed to manage associated symptoms. Medications such as antibiotics or antiviral medications may be prescribed to treat bacterial or viral causes respectively. Seizures may also need to be treated with anticonvulsants while fluid replacement therapy may be necessary in cases involving dehydration.

Complications related to AES will depend on how severe it is; however, some potential long-term problems that can occur include hearing loss, intellectual disability and paralysis. In some cases, an individual may experience chronic fatigue or memory problems due to damage incurred from the inflammation in their brain.

While anyone can potentially develop AES, individuals who are immunocompromised due to HIV/AIDS or other conditions have an increased risk for developing this condition as well as those who live in areas where environmental exposure could lead to increased infections such as floods or unhygienic living conditions.

You can reduce your risk of developing AES by practicing good hygiene including washing your hands regularly with soap and avoiding contact with people who appear ill or are known to have infectious diseases. Additionally it is beneficial to get vaccinated against illnesses such as measles and mumps which could potentially lead to encephalitis if left untreated.
