History
African and African Diaspora Studies first began to emerge out of post-Civil Rights struggle in the late 1960s when activists sought out ways to repair the damage inflicted upon Black Americans through centuries of systematic discrimination and oppression. The goal was to create an academically rigorous framework for studying African American history and culture that had been overlooked or undervalued previously by mainstream academics. This branch of scholarship was sometimes referred to as “black studies” or “Afro-American studies” in its early days before being widely accepted as a legitimate academic discipline with its own research methods, theories, and disciplines—paving the way for other forms of ethnic studies such as those focused on Latin America or Asia. By 1998 AADS had been established enough to be included in university course catalogs across the United States with more than 200 programs now offering courses related to this field at some degree level today.

Such projects should be approved by an advisor before beginning research
