What does AEPM mean in MUSEUMS

The Association of European Printing Museums (AEPM) is a non-profit organization that seeks to promote and protect the traditional techniques of printing and publishing throughout Europe. It works to preserve the legacy of these tools and methods, understanding their historical importance to our culture. AEPM also serves as an advocate for educating communities about the craft, offering conferences, workshops, exhibitions, publications and educational resources.

AEPM was founded in 1986 with support from UNESCO. The efforts were led by a group of individuals determined to safeguard, share and celebrate Europe’s long history of printing and related arts. By collaborating with partners in museums, universities, libraries and private sector organizations they share knowledge and resources across borders.

The AEPM has initiated many successful projects in its 35 year history. Examples include creating a catalogue raisonné containing information on all known European bookbinding stamps from 1700-1900; launching an international travelling exhibition exploring early modern printmaking; producing an online database cataloguing thousands manuscripts printed between 1450-1800 from 56 European libraries; organizing a series of symposiums dedicated to specific aspects within the field; and providing academic research materials such as bibliographies or guidelines for setting up museum collections related to printing.

Yes! One hallmark of AEPM's approach is its strong commitment to collaboration. This includes working with over 3000 museums across Europe who share their inventory data with each other through the AEPM Registry Online Exposition platform (REX). They have also partnered with numerous other institutions including various universities, libraries, international organizations such as UNESCO and private sector companies providing expertise on digitalisation or marketing strategies.
