What does AELD mean in LITERACY

Through AELD, adults can gain the necessary skills to enter or re-enter the workforce. There are also many other benefits of participating in AELD programs such as improving language skills, developing job skills, increasing work opportunities and financial security.

Typically, most individuals over 18 who have not completed their high school diploma or equivalent are eligible for AELD programs. Some states may also offer additional eligibility requirements such as prior work experience or financial need.

AELD offers a wide array of educational services that help adults gain knowledge and skills needed to become successful members of society. These services include literacy instruction, English language instruction, basic education courses (math and reading), vocational education and training, postsecondary education programs and apprenticeships.

Generally speaking, no fees are required for participation in an AELD program; however some states may require nominal registration or course fees. Additionally, there may be individual costs associated with materials needed for a particular class such as textbooks or computer access fees.

Although completion of an AELD program helps individuals gain the necessary skills to be employed; it does not guarantee employment because there is no guarantee employers will hire those who have completed these programs. However, completing an approved AELD program can help boost confidence levels when seeking new employment opportunities.
