What does AEH mean in HISTORY

AEH stands for African Economic History.

Scholars who specialize in this field are known as economic historians and may come from a variety of disciplines including economics, business administration, sociology and anthropology.

Topics covered include but are not limited to trade and markets; labor; capital accumulation; state formation; technology; colonialism; slavery; transportation/communication networks; taxation policies; currency systems; infrastructure development (railroads, roads); private enterprise development (firms, banks); agricultural production methods; and demographic shifts.

Sources include qualitative or quantitative materials such as government documents, newspaper articles from various time periods, interviews with local people concerning past economic activities in their area along with previous surveys. Other sources used in this field include archaeological evidence like fossils or ceramics which help look at patterns over time down to very small scale levels. Oral history is also often used as source material in this field just like it is with many other fields of study related to Africa's history.

While modern economics relies heavily on mathematical formulas to analyze data points and predict outcomes in an international context, the study of AEH uses much more qualitative data than quantitative data that takes into account socio-cultural influences like language barriers when looking at policy implementation within a specific country or region. Furthermore, AEH requires that any model be tailored specifically to the area in question since what works for one place might not work for another.
