What does DPC mean in ARCHITECTURE

A Damp-Proof Course (DPC) is an impermeable material that provides a barrier against moisture and rising damp in buildings, preventing it from penetrating walls, floors, and other areas within the property.

A DPC should always be installed at or just above ground level. Generally, it will be found 150mm up from the external ground level so that it is not damaged by any future external works to the building such as landscaping or paving.

There are several materials that can be used for constructing a DPC such as plastic membranes made from polythene or bitumen mastic which are typically used for new builds. For existing properties metal flashing or even lead sheets can also be used if necessary.

In general terms, most damp proof membranes will last around 50 years depending on their construction and installation method. However, over time original membranes may need replacing due to damage or degradation caused by wear and tear or climate conditions.

A DPC is essential in protecting buildings against moisture build up in walls and floors which can cause major structural damage if left unchecked over time.
