What does DOI mean in TRANSPORTATION

The Department of Interior has the responsibility of managing and conserving public lands, natural resources, and cultural sites; it also oversees other related environmental matters such as Native American tribal relations, endangered species protection, and sustainable development.

The Secretary of the Interior leads the Department of Interior. They are appointed by the President with confirmation from the U.S. Senate.

There are 5 main bureaus that make up DOI including Bureau of Land Management (BLM), National Park Service (NPS), Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), Bureau of Reclamation (BOR), and Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). Additionally there are several offices that work alongside these bureaus such as Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) and Office of Natural Resources Revenue (ONRR).

DOI's mission is to protect America's natural resources through conservation efforts such as land management, wildlife preservation, energy production regulation, mineral rights enforcement, state-tribal cooperation initiatives, recreational access management to federal land areas. Additionally DOI provides services such as archaeological surveys, endangered species management plans or watershed restoration projects on these data points or other scientific data necessary to conform to policy decisions concerning resource management planning goals.
