History & Purpose

The Anthropological Association of Greece was founded in 1976 by a group of anthropologists from various fields of study including ethnology, archaeology and linguistics. Its main purpose was to promote anthropology as a scientific discipline in Greece. Since then it has grown into a nationally respected organization with an international presence that has greatly contributed to the advancement of anthropological knowledge in Greek society and abroad. The Association holds regular meetings throughout the year where professionals present their work. It also provides an avenue for teaching young researchers methods in fieldwork and research design as well as developing collaborations between universities across borders. Furthermore it also works towards uniting local communities through initiatives such as providing seminars on cultural heritage conservation among others.

Publications & Events

To further promote its mission AEE has published numerous books over the years including both academic works such as monographs and textbooks on subjects ranging from social dynamics to population genetics; along with popular works such as biographies or fiction stories about historical events or figures related to anthropology in Greece. Additionally it organises various conferences which bring together scholars from all over Greece who present their research findings related to their specific area of interest in anthropology. These events provide great opportunities for career development for those interested in pursuing a career within this fascinating field especially at times when traditional funding sources are scarce or non-existent due to austerity measures being implemented at different levels within Greek institutions governing higher education.
