What does DND mean in DRUGS

DND stands for Drugs for Neglected Diseases. This term describes diseases that have been, or are currently, neglected by research and development into effective treatments and medicines. These diseases are often found in the most impoverished areas of the world, and disproportionately affect marginalized populations.

DND focuses on researching and developing treatments and medications for illnesses such as malaria, tuberculosis, human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, scabies, buruli ulcer, among others. These are often communicable diseases endemic to low-income countries and populations in need of specific resources to combat them effectively.

DND research typically receives support from non-profit organizations dedicated to providing access to essential medicines in areas where they’re lacking or non-existent. Government foundations and other private funding partners may also provide financial support depending on the scope of the project.

The aim typically is to create alternative treatments with fewer negative side effects than existing patent protected drugs or drugs with prolonged patent periods. This can be achieved through the development of new chemical entities or reformulation of existing drugs so that their effectiveness is enhanced while decreasing their cost.

Medicines developed under the purview of Drugs for Neglected Diseases must still comply with relevant regulatory laws in order to be approved for use. This means that clinical trials must be conducted which adhere to Good Clinical Practice guidelines set out by international agencies such as WHO ICH M2 or FDA IND 21 CFR 312 regulations. At this point if efficacy is proven then a request will typically be made for market authorization from the authorities involved.
