The province was formed in 1858 during Dutch colonial rule. At that time it was known as Dejumo Negoro Kingdom or Djampo Negoro Kingdom and its inhabitants were from different tribes such as Minangkabau, Javanese and Malay ethnic groups. In 1948 after Indonesian independence, Djampo Negoro was renamed into Daijah Swarga Negara (DSN) meaning 'State Royal District'. Later on it became part of Sumatra Autonomous Region until 1956 when it was renamed to become Daerah Tingkat I (DTI) or Level 1 Area which again changed to Daerah Tingkat II (DTII) or Level 2 Area in 1959 when its name changed at last to Daerah Jambi (DJB).
