Definition

ADW is most commonly used in reference to the African diaspora, which refers to people with African ancestry living outside their ancestral homeland in other parts of the world. This diaspora includes all those descended from the involuntary displacement of populations during slavery and colonization, migration caused by political unrest or natural disasters, voluntary relocation for work opportunities or education, as well as communities established through intermarriage between Africans and non-Africans. These individuals have contributed significantly to enriching the cultures of their new homelands while also maintaining much of their original traditions.

History

ADW is a relatively modern term that reflects increased recognition of the influence and importance of those from an African heritage living outside their homelands - particularly in light of globalization that has seen an exponential growth in people crossing national boundaries over recent decades. Many countries today boast significant numbers of second or third generation descendants whose families originated from elsewhere on the continent yet are now firmly rooted citizens – such as Britain’s West Indian population and South Africa’ssignificant Afro-Caribbean demographic groupings both found throughout various parts of London.
