Career Path

Aaron D. Wyner's impressive career began in 1965 when he earned his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT and went on to receive his PhD from Stanford University in 1969. After holding various position of increasing responsibility at Bell Laboratories, starting as an engineer he eventually was appointed as head of their Mathematical Physics Research Department in 1979, where he stayed until 1982, when he took up a professorship at Northwestern University. Even then Wyner continued to be actively involved with Bell Labs by serving as a consultant for them until 1991, having also served as visiting professor for several universities along the way such as ETH Zurich and The Technion - Israel Institute of Technology.

Achievements

In 1993 Aaron D. Wyner was elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for “contributions to communications engineering” and subsequently received several other distinctions including being named Fellow of National Academy of Engineering (2005), recipient of IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal (2009), IEEE Kiyo Tomabe Award (2009) and Honorary Doctorate in Sciences from ETH Zurich (2010). In 2006 he was included by Thomson ISI as one among world's leading scientists in Computer Science between 1981-2002, during which time he published more than eighty papers that were highly cited by his peers across multiple fields related to Communications Technology such as Information Theory, Networking protocols & algorithms, Antenna Design & Propagation Modeling, etc.
