Symptoms of DGI can include fever, skin rash, joint pain, swelling, and tenderness in the genital area. Other symptoms may also be present including abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.

DGI is typically spread through sexual contact with someone who has the infection. It can also be spread from mother to infant during birth or through contact with infected bodily fluids or tissue.

Possible long-term complications of untreated DGI include infertility in both men and women, septic arthritis, vision loss from gonococcal eye infections, heart valve damage, chronic pelvic pain in women, increased risk for HIV/AIDS if exposed to that virus when infected with DGI, and rare forms of cancer such as lymphoma.

Diagnosis of DGI typically involves a physical exam to look for signs of infection as well as laboratory tests such as a blood test or culture sample from any suspicious discharge or skin lesion that could be caused by the infection.

Treatment for DGI generally consists of antibiotics prescribed by a doctor to help fight off the infection. Depending on how severe the infection is, additional treatments may also be needed such as drainage of an abscess or surgery to repair tissue damage caused by the infection. Additionally lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking and avoiding alcohol can help reduce further complications from this condition.
