History

DFAG was formed in 2003 by local residents who wanted to protect the local environment and wildlife from development plans which would have had negative consequences for the area. The group has since grown to over 1000 members across Hampshire, with branches in Drayton, Farlington, Havant Borough Council, Portsmouth City Council and other areas of the South East of England. Over the years DFAG has campaigned on various environmental issues including airport expansion plans at both Southampton Airport and Bournemouth International Airport; protecting green belts from inappropriate development; supporting renewable energy initiatives; campaigning against fracking; opposing new road building proposals; seeking better public transport links; promoting cycling routes; fighting for rights for cyclists; campaigning against animal cruelty, animal testing or animal trade bans; tackling food waste issues; raising awareness about climate change and much more.

Objectives

The main objective of DFAG is to make sure that their local communities benefit from responsible environmental management and sustainable development through political campaigning, legal action where necessary and public engagement activities. They also work closely with other organisations such as Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), WWF UK amongst others in order to achieve their aims. Furthermore, they strive to create a network of like-minded activists so they can share ideas and collaborate on projects together.

Activities

The activities organised by DFAG include lobbying councils on particular development projects or policies which could have adverse impacts on the environment or human health, organising protests against irresponsible corporate actions that endanger our planet’s ecosystems or resources, providing petitions for signature collections so that concerned citizens can raise their voices collectively against such issues as well as engaging with stakeholders such as government representatives or businesses owners whose decisions affect our environment or society directly. In addition to this education activities are also held annually including talks on different topics related to sustainability/climate change/environmentalism etc., film screenings & discussions about related matters throughout Hampshire & West Sussex counties so that members can gain more insight into different issues impacting our earth’s future.
