What does DEM mean in MEDICAL

The Diploma in Emergency Medicine (DEM) is an internationally-recognised postgraduate qualification which allows medical practitioners and other healthcare professionals to specialise and gain advanced knowledge and skills in the field of emergency medicine.

Medical practitioners who have completed a medical degree and hold a current registration from their country's General Medical Council or equivalent board are eligible to pursue the DEM. Other qualified healthcare professionals such as nurses, paramedics, pharmacists and clinical scientists may also be eligible to pursue the DEM.

The content of a DEM course typically covers topics such as evaluation of acutely ill patients; diagnosis and management of common medical conditions; pharmaceutical management; decision making; trauma management; cardiology; paediatrics; acute surgery emergencies; toxicology, chronic diseases & critical care services.

A full-time Diploma student typically completes their studies within two years but depending on study preferences may opt for multiple part-time pathway options which will take longer than two years.

In most countries, you must possess an approved medical degree as well as valid registration with your country's General Medical Council or equivalent board to enrol on a DEM course. You should also be trained in Basic Life Support (BLS).
